Volunteers in Ghana join Women’s Rights march

 Listening to speakers

Projects Abroad volunteers joined several hundred Ghanaians marching through the streets of Accra, in a demonstration to raise awareness about sexual and reproductive health for women.

Issues on the agenda for women’s rights advocates included female genital mutilation, teenage and unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and unsafe abortions.

The procession was organized by the Commonwealth Human Rights Commission, headed in Ghana by the outspoken women’s rights leader, Nana Oye Luther. Nana Oye works closely with many volunteers from Projects Abroad who volunteer at the Commonwealth Human Rights Commission on our Law and Human Rights project.

Women's rights march

The march formed part of a program of events to mark women’s health and reproductive rights day, with a series of discussions and lectures also taking place at the Accra International Conference Centre later in the day.

The march also marks the beginning of the 41st ordinary session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights, which runs until 30th May.
