Volunteers in Bolivia Embrace World Heart Day

World Heart DayVolunteers in Bolivia recently embarked on an outreach health program to assist elderly people in having their blood sugar and pressure tested to commemorate World Heart Day.

Volunteers checked more than 40 elderly residents at San Jose Nursing Home, one of the project partners for the Care project in Bolivia . Given that the risk of heart disease triples for every ten years of a person’s life, putting the elderly at a high risk for cardiovascular complications, this was an important outreach program for the residents of the home.

“The elderly appreciated the activity and so did our volunteers. We were asked to come back at another opportunity, especially to check blood pressure,” says Mariel Torrez, Communications Officer for Projects Abroad Bolivia.

“It was really interesting. I had never done something like that before, but once I got into it, it was really great," says Patrick Hebbert, a volunteer from the UK that participated on the activity.

“Through regular check-ups, exercise and healthy diets, heart disease can be prevented. The next step in this process is to educate our communities about these measures to reduce the rate of heart disease in Bolivia,” says Torrez on this regard.

Although heart disease is preventable, according to the World Health Organization, it is one of the top four leading causes of death, in both men and women globally, so a well-informed person on the subject can become an agent of change in his/her community and save some lives along the way.
