Senegal journalism volunteers broadcast to the world

Journalism volunteers in Senegal may soon find their fame spreading far beyond the town of St Louis, thanks to Projects Abroad's recent donation of a new computer to Radio Teranga FM.

Radio Teranga

One of the main duties of journalism volunteers is researching and reading the international news bulletins, as well as commentating on local events and hosting music programmes. Some volunteers even manage to put together their own documentary programmes during their placements. Host families tune in regularly to hear their adopted offsprings' broadcasts, and it's not unusual to hear a familiar voice blaring from the radio in a passing taxi or local restaurant. However, the new computer means that Radio Teranga can now be heard worldwide, 24 hours a day, over the internet. Friends and family in the UK, Holland, the USA - in fact anywhere, can now listen to volunteers at work and find out exactly what they're getting up to during their placement!

Recent Radio Teranga shows have been livened up by calls from Senegalese expatriates phoning in from Canada, the UK and other parts of Africa, delighted to be reminded of home town news and music in their far-flung corners and eager to send messages to old friends and loved ones at home. Editor-in-Chief Malal Diagne is now exploring possibilities for collaboration with foreign radio stations and for organising international discussion programmes on topical themes.
