On Monday November 23rd, Projects Abroad presented donations of medical supplies to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. A placement for Projects Abroad Medicine interns, NCI is the country’s largest public oncological hospital.

Projects Abroad helps prevention of dengue fever in Bogo City, Philippines

In October, Projects Abroad volunteers and interns from different projects across the Philippines came together to conduct a massive larviciding campaign to prevent the spread of the illness, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Cebu and the City of Bogo. Close to 1,200 people attended.

High School Special medical volunteers assist over 1,000 Sri Lankans through outreach programs

Over this past summer, Projects Abroad hosted more medical outreach programs than ever before in Sri Lanka. Although these kinds of programs have been run in Sri Lanka for over a decade, this is the first time that High School Special Medicine volunteers have been able to assist in organizing the camps. With their help, we were able to treat over 1,000 patients.

Folding Wings of Hope in Panadura

Projects Abroad Sri Lanka’s High School Specials Medicine volunteers collaborated on a project to send wishes of hope, health and good fortune to new mothers and babies. Inspired by Japanese tradition, 13 High School Specials volunteers crafted 1000 paper cranes to decorate the wards at the Kethumathi Hospital for Women in Panadura, a town in the Kalutara district in Sri Lanka’s Western Province, some 25 kilometers south of Colombo.

University of Delaware Students Contribute to Rehabilitation Center in Vietnam

This summer, a group of students from the University of Delaware traveled to Vietnam with Projects Abroad to intern at the Thuy An Rehabilitation Center for Disabled Children, where they helped local staff treat mentally and physically disabled children.

Medicine volunteers in Ghana give hospital pediatrics unit a new look

Projects Abroad Medicine volunteers in Ghana have partnered with the Francis Eshun Baidoo (FEB) Foundation to paint the pediatrics unit of the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. The hospital’s pediatrics unit receives surgical, orthopedic and general medical cases affecting children within the Central Region of Ghana.

Conservation volunteers build their own nature reserve in the Galapagos

Owned by the Director of Projects Abroad Ecuador, William Puga, and partly funded by Projects Abroad itself, a new nursery is well on its way to housing some of the Galapagos’ most precious plant species. The Galapagos National Park, a Projects Abroad partner, will provide plants for the nursery and provide assistance and guidance to volunteers during the development stages at the nursery.

Costa Rica volunteers help schools gain eco-friendly awards

One of the primary concerns of the Conservation Project in Costa Rica, is the integration of the local community with the conservation efforts going on inside the national park. The primary form through which this initiative is realized is through the Bandera Azul or “Blue Flag” program that Projects Abroad volunteers have worked to implement in local schools.

Satchel Tangonan from White Plains and Y-Lan Nguyen from New York City, have been best friends since they first met at mathematics class at Macaulay Honors College at the City College of New York. Fiji Shark Conservation Project turns one year old

Projects Abroad Jamaica brought some festive cheer to children this past Christmas through the annual toy drive, which saw 1248 toys given to underprivileged children across the country. Dubbed “Operation Krismus Smile” this ambitious project ensured that children received a gift this year.

Potomac School Graduate gains Conservation experience in Costa Rica

Nineteen year old Kathleen Wilson, a graduate from The Potomac School in Virginia, USA, has always been interested the world around her. Eager to seize the opportunity to see the world as a volunteer, as well as to gain experience in her field of interest, Kathleen spent 7 weeks on a conservation project with Projects Abroad.
