Dr. Peter Slowe

Peter Slowe is the founder and Director of Projects Abroad, a leading global volunteer placement organization. Born March 9, 1953 in England, he is an accomplished, well-travelled academic, having earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography from the University of Bristol, and a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Oxford (Jesus and Nuffield Colleges). During college, he spent a “gap year” in India (1970-71) teaching English and cricket at St. Joseph’s School, Baramulla, Kashmir.

Dr. Slowe spent more than ten years in academia, serving as a professor in geography at the University of Chichester (West Sussex) from 1983-1996. It was while serving in this position that Dr. Slowe founded Projects Abroad, an organization aimed at students interested in taking their own “gap year” to travel and volunteer abroad.

In 1990 Dr. Slowe established an EU-funded exchange project with Transilvania University, Brasov, Romania. This, and similar arrangements in Moldova, enabled him to identify the need for volunteers to do various forms of work as well as teach the English language in Eastern Europe. He arranged for a group of his British students to help on these projects in Moldova in 1992, which was the start of Projects Abroad.

Dr. Slowe worked as a part-time professor for four years while building the newly-founded organization. In 1996, Dr. Slowe gave up his academic career altogether to focus on Projects Abroad as more and more volunteers began signing up. Today, with more than 350 trained staff members, 26 destinations and 25,000 volunteers, Projects Abroad has successfully become one of the world’s leading international volunteer organizations.

Dr. Slowe has a keen interest in politics, and has been quite active in British politics throughout his career. He is an avid supporter of the Labour Party and in 1987 he was a Parliamentary candidate. He is actively involved in the Labour Finance and Industry Group, serving as secretary from 1989-1994, then as chair from 1994-1998 and 2009-2010, and as vice president from 1998-present.

He has published several groundbreaking books, including the innovative Geography and Political Power: The Geography of Nations and States (1990,) a bestselling analysis of the connection between political theory and geographical facts. More of Dr. Slowe’s published works include Manny Shinwell: Authorized Biography (1993), Battlefield Berlin: Siege, Surrender And Occupation (1988,) Fields of Death: Battle Scenes of the First World War (1986) and The Advance Factory in Regional Development (1981.) Dr. Slowe has also published several academic papers.

Dr. Slowe is married and has one son.
